Okahu Bay
The Ōkahu Bay stormwater network separation project was devised to improve the water quality and swimability in Ōkahu Bay by reducing wet weather wastewater overflows into Ōkahu Bay. The Bay’s water quality has significantly deteriorated over this time, in part due to repeated wastewater overflows. These overflows have occurred due to the combined sewer and stormwater system having insufficient capacity to handle intense or prolonged rainfall events. The project objective was to investigate and separate properties running on a combined sewer system and to upgrade and install new stormwater public line assets to future-proof the area. CB Civil undertook works directly for Auckland Council Healthy Waters. The works involve the separation of stormwater and wastewater pipes for over 200 properties. Removing their reliance on private drainage and connecting them to the public network to mitigate the pressure and prevent overflows.
This involved the use of trenched and trenchless methods to install:
3,378m of public PE stormwater pipes ranging in sizes up to 675 mm
8,000m of private PE stormwater pipes
112 manholes

Value Engineering through ECI
The strategy was clear from the beginning – Plan effectively, have the right engineering , stakeholder engagement, supervision and approach to continuous improvement and the programme and cost will take care of itself. Our team were engaged by Auckland City Council as part of Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) to ensure the scope of works and methodology would ensure successful outcomes.
Our team set 21 Key Result Areas for broader outcomes, all of which were achieved adding significant value to the client throughout. From embedding a hiring strategy for rangatahi from the local iwi, Ngati Whatua Orakei, to reducing 460 TCO2e of carbon and 8 manholes through value engineering in the methodology, our team set the bar through ECI and continually raised it throughout the duration of the project. These broader outcomes not only reduced cost, duration and emissions but also promoted wider community and staff benefits, ultimately making this the CCNZ Auckland Project of the Year Winner!
