Project experts down tools to build Hamilton school a new playground

Hard hats, high-vis and small diggers were intriguing for a group of Hamilton school kids, but it’s the outcome they’re going to enjoy the most. CB Civil workers have put their regular day job on hold to help out Knighton Normal School in Hillcrest with a new junior play area.

Project engineer Chris McGillivray said one of those neighbours was Knighton Normal primary school.

“One of the community engagement objectives for the project was that CB Civil would deliver some volunteer work, and this was seen as a really good opportunity to give something back, so overall our contribution will work out to be about $20,000 worth of volunteer work.”

CB Civil staff are donating their time, equipment and materials for a kidney shaped sandpit and a concrete water feature. While used to more technical projects, site foreman Sam Mitchell and the team have brought some of those skills to the playground.

“It’s an in ground sandpit so effectively digging out a swimming pool, so we have put a big soak hole in and also for the water feature.

“I’ve gone over and above with the soakage, but nothing worse than a sandpit full of water.”

It’s been entertaining for the pupils who have enjoyed watching the work unfold, said associate principal Anne Hoare.

“All our construction hats from the dress-up have appeared, and they’re all wearing construction hats.

Hoare said being able to play at primary school is helpful.

“At pre-school that is what they do, they are very much learning through play, and suddenly that pre-school world is finished, and they come to school, and you expect them to sit at a desk, and you expect them to be still, and it doesn't work”.

With CB Civil not working on the wastewater project while Fieldays traffic was in town it allowed them to put in some solid hours on the playground – which is planned to be finished this week.

Hamilton City Council’s executive director strategic infrastructure, Andrew Parsons said this is the kind of community outcomes the council is aiming to achieve from the Peacocke programme
